Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park Expansion: Pilot Phase Set for 2024 amid Stakeholder Concerns

by Africano@2023 December 13, 2023 1504 0 Comment

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) CEO, Francis Gatare, unveiled plans for the pilot phase of the Volcanoes National Park Expansion project, slated to commence in 2024. Gatare’s announcement came during his appearance before the lower chamber of Parliament, where he addressed pertinent issues confronting the hospitality and tourism industry.

Among the critical concerns raised were challenges related to poaching within reserves and parks, as well as the consequential damage inflicted on residents’ crops by animals migrating from these protected areas. Additionally, unresolved disputes surrounding the proposed expansion of the Volcanoes National Park have fueled frustrations among landowners in the affected region.

The pilot phase of the expansion project signifies a pivotal step in Rwanda’s conservation efforts, aimed at bolstering the preservation of its natural heritage while navigating the concerns of local stakeholders. Gatare’s disclosure marks a milestone in the ongoing dialogue between authorities, residents, and conservationists, seeking a harmonious resolution that balances environmental conservation with community interests.

The expansion initiative, while holding promises for enhanced biodiversity protection and habitat preservation, has encountered challenges stemming from conflicting interests and land ownership disputes. These issues have underscored the delicate balance required between safeguarding natural habitats and addressing the socio-economic concerns of the communities residing in the vicinity of the park.

As Rwanda moves forward with the pilot phase in 2024, there is a concerted effort to address the multifaceted challenges facing the Volcanoes National Park Expansion project. The aim remains to foster sustainable conservation practices that not only protect the natural ecosystem but also mitigate conflicts and promote mutually beneficial solutions for local communities.

The upcoming pilot phase signals a crucial juncture in Rwanda’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. It reflects a proactive approach to navigating challenges, fostering cooperation, and achieving a harmonious balance between conservation imperatives and community needs.
