Rwanda Secures Major Delivery of Medical Diagnostic Equipment Through New Strategy

by UWIZEYIMANA Joselyne June 21, 2024 684 0 Comment

On June 20, the Ministry of Health announced the arrival of a significant consignment of medical imaging equipment, acquired by the Rwandan government in a strategic partnership with Siemens Healthineers, a German healthcare technology provider.

The shipment includes computerized tomography (CT) scanners, fixed and mobile X-ray machines, mammography machines for early breast cancer detection, and medical ultrasound devices, among other equipment. CT scans are a radiological imaging technique that provides doctors with detailed internal images for diagnostic purposes.

According to the Ministry of Health, this advanced diagnostic equipment enables doctors to accurately identify diseases within the body, thereby addressing gaps in diagnostics and improving treatment outcomes. This development marks a significant milestone in Rwanda’s national effort to enhance healthcare services by providing greater access to state-of-the-art medical diagnostic systems, the ministry stated.

“This partnership is part of an ongoing reform by the Ministry of Health to strategically acquire and equip public health facilities with cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, ensuring optimal care for Rwandans at a decentralized level,” the statement reads.

The Ministry also plans to bolster medical technology services across hospitals in Rwanda. This initial batch of equipment will be followed by further acquisitions aimed at revolutionizing medical imaging capabilities and providing Rwandan healthcare professionals with advanced tools for precise and timely diagnoses.

Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana emphasized the significance of this acquisition, noting it as the first time Rwanda has received such a substantial number of medical devices. He highlighted that the equipment would be distributed to university teaching hospitals, district hospitals, and smaller health facilities nationwide, significantly improving diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Julien Niyingabira, Division Manager of the Rwanda Health Communication Centre, described the consignment as extensive, with numerous pieces of equipment. Although he did not disclose the exact number of devices or the cost, he confirmed that the CT scanners, featuring updated technology, would be allocated to various hospitals, including King Faisal Hospital, university teaching hospitals (CHUK and CHUB), Rwanda Military Hospital, and district hospitals.

On May 21, during a general assembly of the Rwanda Private Medical Facilities Association (RPMFA) in Kigali, Nsanzimana mentioned that Rwanda had initiated a strategic acquisition of medical equipment, aiming to reduce equipment costs by half.

Nsanzimana explained that the new procurement model involves bulk purchasing directly from manufacturers, thus addressing the previously high costs associated with multiple intermediaries in the supply chain.
