Naomi Campbell’s Ode to Rwandan Elegance: A Tale of Umushanana Chic

by ABAYIZERA Joselyne January 19, 2024 777 6 Comments

In the glittering world of high fashion, Naomi Campbell, the iconic supermodel, recently made waves with her exquisite fashion choices, donning the traditional Rwandan women’s attire known as Umushanana. This unexpected yet captivating style statement unfolded on two prestigious occasions—the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and the Cannes Film Festival.

Fast forward to the 14th of May, and Naomi Campbell once again graced the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, stealing the spotlight in a green Umushanana-inspired ensemble. The outfit featured light blackish detailing on the left shoulder, showcasing a different yet equally mesmerizing interpretation of the traditional Rwandan attire. Among the sea of glamorous attendees, Campbell’s distinctive Umushanana designs stood out, reaffirming her status as a trailblazer in the world of fashion.

Speculations about the origin of Campbell’s fashion inspiration point to her visit to Rwanda, where she immersed herself in the rich cultural experience. During her stay, she embarked on a thrilling adventure of gorilla trekking, gaining a deeper appreciation for the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Many believe that her exposure to Umushanana during the Kwita Izina event in Rwanda might have left a lasting impression, influencing her choice of attire at the Met Gala.
