October 2025 – Huye, Rwanda
Once again, the town of Huye turned into a lively hub of joy and hospitality as the University of Rwanda held its 11th graduation ceremony. The event attracted thousands of graduates, parents, and visitors from across the country, filling the town with excitement, laughter, and economic activity. For several days, Huye often known as the “intellectual city” of Rwanda proved that it is also one of the nation’s most welcoming and business-friendly destinations.

From the early hours of the morning, restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, and transport operators felt the pulse of graduation fever. Local eateries such as La Tarte, Africano Restaurant, and Inzozi Café saw a dramatic rise in customers.
This week is a blessing for us,” said a waitress at La Tarte. “We prepare extra meals and work longer hours to make sure everyone leaves satisfied.”
Accommodation facilities also benefited greatly. Hotels like Ibis, Galileo, and Light House were fully booked, some even weeks in advance. The influx of guests led many homeowners to open their doors for short-term rentals a sign of how the graduation event stimulates not just businesses but the entire local economy.
For transport providers, the demand was equally high. Taxi-moto riders, bus operators, and car rentals reported a significant increase in earnings as they transported graduates and their families to venues, restaurants, and sightseeing spots. “Graduation week is when we all smile,” said a moto rider near Huye Campus. “Even those who usually earn little can make double or triple during this time.”
The positive impact extended beyond services and sales. Street vendors sold souvenirs, graduation cards, and traditional crafts, while tailors worked overtime to design elegant dresses and suits for the big day. Huye’s small businesses showcased the power of community entrepreneurship, turning celebration into opportunity.
Beyond the economic side, the graduation brought a sense of unity and pride to the town. Streets were clean, flowerbeds well maintained, and security officers ensured the safety of visitors. The energy in Huye was more than just celebration, it reflected a town that understands how to welcome, serve, and shine.
As visitors explored beyond the graduation grounds, many took time to discover Huye’s tourist attractions from the Ethnographic Museum and Mount Huye to the peaceful Arboretum and coffee plantations nearby. For many guests, it was a chance to experience the heart of Rwanda’s culture and hospitality firsthand.
Ultimately, Huye’s 11th graduation ceremony was not just an academic milestone; it was a reminder that the town stands at the intersection of education, culture, and tourism. Each celebration continues to strengthen Huye’s reputation as a vibrant, welcoming destination where tradition meets opportunity, and every guest feels right at home.
