RSB and KOICA Launch $8 Million Initiative to Enhance Rwanda’s Industrial Standards through Technology

by ABAYIZERA Joselyne July 2, 2024 835 0 Comment

On June 28, the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) initiated a groundbreaking project named the Strengthening Rwanda Industrial Standardization ICT Capacity (SISIC). This venture is set to bolster RSB’s ability to promote industrial standardization, integrating advanced technology into the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI).

Spanning from 2024 to 2028 and backed by an $8 million budget, this project aims to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across key sectors, enhancing their competitiveness. It aligns with Rwanda’s strategic goals to fortify its industrial and trade sectors through robust quality standards and innovative ICT solutions.

The SISIC project will focus on advancing metrology, conformity assessment, and certification services, elevating Rwanda’s industrial output to meet global standards and improve its competitive edge in both regional and international markets.

KOICA’s Country Director, Jinhwa Kim, emphasized that the initiative supports Rwanda’s National Strategy for Transformation and Vision 2050 by digitizing various aspects of RSB’s operations, including service delivery to SMEs across the nation. Kim expressed enthusiasm about equipping RSB with digital systems to enhance service efficiency and quality.

“We are excited to provide these digital tools to RSB, allowing them to offer higher quality services more effectively. Additionally, we will offer online training courses to SMEs, ensuring they can access top-notch services from anywhere,” Kim stated.

She highlighted Rwanda’s leadership in Africa and KOICA’s commitment to boosting RSB’s capabilities. “As RSB excels in standardization, testing, certification, and metrology, Rwanda’s industrial competitiveness will significantly improve.”

RSB’s Director General, Raymond Murenzi, outlined the initiative’s objectives, focusing on delivering RSB services swiftly and efficiently. “This project will enable SMEs to access standardization services through digital platforms, aligning with Rwanda’s goals for industrial growth and export development,” Murenzi said.

He also discussed plans to integrate technology across RSB’s services, allowing businesses to access necessary resources remotely. “This approach will expedite development, facilitating quicker entry of Rwandan products into the global market.”

Murenzi added that the project would provide training and education on quality standards via online platforms, including smart classrooms, enabling SMEs to learn without the need to travel.

A consortium of Solutek Systems Co. Ltd., Korea Standards Association (KSA), and Korea Industry Modernization Association (KOIIA) will oversee the project’s implementation, ensuring its success and alignment with Rwanda’s industrial advancement goals.
